WinPS1 Problem

I am attempting to run PS1.3a on a Windows 2000 machine.
I am able to do so successfully using VDMSound. PS runs fine - other than the problem with some of the voice files having the wrong pitch. My MS Sidewinder USB joystick also works well, though I do have to refresh the calibration menu once per session to get the elevator axis to work - (which I understand to be a common problem.)
Tonight, I thought I'd give WinPS1 (version 30) a try. I installed it, and the supporting DLL files as per the instructions. When I run the ipc3 program, a blank command window pops up with "WinPS1" in the title bar, then an immediate Windows error box with the message:
"The exception Guard Page Exception
A page of memory that marks the end of a data structure, such as a stack or array, has been accessed. (0x80000001) occurred in the application at location 0x74fad47a."The only option I have is to terminate the program.
I thought this might be caused by an interaction with VDMSound, so I uninstalled it, but it made no difference.
Do I need any other supporting software to be installed (Broker or the like) to make WinPS1 work?
Any advice would be appreciated.
