In Response To: Re: Compressor Stall in 747 (Long) (Avi Adin)

I believe the Airbus tail section, being composite, was found to be prone to failure if some types of aggressive use of the rudder are used. My distant memory tells me that pilots were advised not to swing the rudder from left to right to counter act wake turbulence if they are following a large airliner such as a 747. I think I recall correctly that this specific Airbus had been repaired in tail section during manufacturing.

The United 747 San Francisco pilot could have presumably used rudder control reasonably freely since the 747 is not made of this specific composite materials design. Metals can fatigue, of course.

Compressor stalls and failures to start in an airliner jet engine can be very frightening - I experienced a failure to start when a turboprop flight began a few years ago.

The pilot kindly but with some fear seemingly present in his face, said that anyone who didn't want to fly on the airplane should get off and take the next flight. I did so, glad to be able to avoid flying on an airliner which had violently hot started. The plane was strangely cleared after the hot start failure by the airliner's mechanics via telephone for takeoff with passengers so as to become relocated at its primary maintenance base in New York. The engine's loud bang/explosion noises were remarkable, and the engine then suddenly ran up to very high rpm before the pilot could shut it down.

Best wishes,

Phil Bunch
