PS1.3a in XP

I have gone through all the procedure for setting up PS1.3a in WXP (SP1) but when I try to start the program I get as far as the screen asking if I have a soundblaster and then it refuses to respond to the keyboard.

I have to ALT-TAB out of it and use CTRL-ALT-DEL to invoke task manager to be able to terminate the program.

All assistance greatfully received
